About Changing Passwords

You change your password when:

Before changing your password, choose one that follows these rules:

When do passwords expire?

Passwords expire in a specified number of days. The default is normally 45 days and can be updated when the security guidelines change. Currently, passwords expire after 90 days.

An informative notice is displayed near the time that the password expires. The notice default is 14 days and it can be updated when the security guidelines change. The notice contains the number days remaining before your password expires.

For example, if a password expires in 45 days, then the password notification starts on day 31, and informs you that the password expires in 14 days. The following day the message indicates the password expires in 13 days, and so on until you change the password.

If the expired password is not changed before the last day, then you must change the password on the very last day before you are authorized to log on to the North Dakota MMIS Web Portal.

If you do not log on to the North Dakota MMIS Web Portal for a specified number of days from the time your password expired, your account is disabled and the status of the user ID is inactive. The default length of time is 30 days before a user ID becomes inactive and the default can be updated when the security guidelines change.

Can I reuse old passwords?

A certain number of new passwords are required before you can use the first password over again. Five is a default and can be changed based upon current security guidelines in effect. Currently, 24 new passwords must be used before reusing a password.

When are one-time passwords created?

One-time passwords are issued when your password is reset.

When you log on using your initial or one-time password you are required to change the password before gaining access to North Dakota MMIS Web Portal.

How does my password get locked?

If you make multiple unsuccessful attempts to log on, your account is locked. Only an Organization Administrator within your organization or an Enterprise Administrator can unlock your account. A new one-time password is given to use during your next log on attempt.

Note: A Customer Service user cannot reset a password for an inactive account.

What if the Organization Administrator forgets his or her password?

An Organization Administrator for a provider can call Customer Service to reset his or her password. The Organization Administrator (or any user) can also call the Enterprise Administrator to have his or her password reset. When the Organization Administrator logs on to North Dakota MMIS Web Portal with the reset password, he or she is required to change the password.

Note: If the Organization Administrator’s account is inactive, Customer Service cannot reset the password. They will contact an Enterprise Administrator to reset the password, following standard procedures
